Jaquet Droz Timepiece Evokes a Tropical Landscape
Swiss luxury watch brand Jaquet Droz has created a beautiful handcrafted timepiece inspired by a tropical landscape teeming with birds and other natural wonders.
Celebrating the Enlightenment-era passion for nature and animals of brand founder and namesake Pierre Jaquet-Droz, the Jaquet Droz Tropical Bird Repeater is a highly limited edition watch with only 8 pieces made.
The dial is made of mother of pearl, hand-engraved and painted to depict exotic tropical flora and fauna from a lush forest scene. In the centre is a hummingbird which moves towards the shrub of bright orange birds of paradise near 9 o’clock and beats its wings up to 40 times per second.
On activation of the automaton’s mechanism by the wearer, the hummingbird beats its wings, the peacock to the right fans and closes its tail, and a toucan emerges from the palm leaves at 3 o’clock to open its beak.
Three dragonflies near 9 o’clock flit around and flap tiny Super-Luminova coated wings, which are particularly striking in the dark.
The watch case is 47mm-wide by 18.95mm-thick and is made of 18-karat red gold and features hand-applied engraving along the sides and lugs. A rolled-edge dark green alligator strap matches the tropical theme.
The watch is powered by the new Jaquet Droz RMA89 mechanical movement and beats a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, with around 86 hours of power reserve.
The Jaquet Droz Tropical Bird Repeater watch is priced at $661,500.
